3 tons of chicken meat seized at Novo Selo border checkpoint

Customs officers at Novo Selo border checkpoint at the Macedonian – Bulgarian border seized more than 3 tons of chicken meat, Macedonian Utrinski Vesnik and Dnevnik dailies report.
The meat was hidden in a mini-bus driven by a Bulgarian national. The smuggled meat was seized a couple of days ago, when the vehicle tried to cross the border from Macedonia.

The driver said that the mini-bus is empty and showed customs documents to prove it. However, a thorough check-up revealed that the vehicle is divided into two parts, as the bigger one was right behind the driver’s cabin. The driver said that this section of the vehicle is not used as its door is broken and cannot be open.

“In the cabin there was a steel rope and customs officers decided that it is used to open the blocked door. They managed to open the door and found 145 boxes each containing 12 kilos of chicken meat and 172 packages of 7.5 kilos each,” Macedonian customs informed.
According to the customs authorities, the meat comes from Brazil and has been loaded in the Macedonian town of Strumica.

The driver of the vehicle, a Bulgarian national, will be imposed a sanction as provided under the law.
