Bulgaria was ranked 145th in a survey of the world's happiest nations, featuring 178, it emerged on Thursday.
That makes the country one of the world's unhappiest, while at the bottom of the chart stands Zimbabwe. The Pacific island nation of Vanuatu is the happiest place on earth, according to a new "happy planet index".
It showed that all of Bulgaria's neighbors - Greece, Turkey, Romania and Macedonia - have happier people.
Bulgarians, however, are happier than Americans, who landed at number 150. The UK takes the 108th.
